These words are often irregular in terms of how they are pronounced. You can read more details about sight words on the linked article, including their definitions, benefits, examples and properties. Most importantly, teaching Sight Words for Kids will enable them to develop vocabulary and language skills. This is certainly useful for their educational growth and academic success.

Here, we are going to focus particularly on the 3rd Grade Sight Words. We will see the sight words Edward William Dolch came up with for the 3rd graders. We will go on to explore a few sentences framed with 3rd Grade sight words.

Finally, we will have a look at the third set of sight words as put forth by Fry.

Dolch Sight Words for 3rd Grade

Dr Dolch found the most frequently used words in the then children books and published a list of such words in a journal article in 1936.

Later on, he published these words in his book “Problems of Reading” in 1948. He has given a sight words list for each of the grades starting from Pre Kindergarten to Third Grade. He is also regarded as the father of Sight Words.

To know more about the Pre – Kindergarten and Kindergarten sight words, or to explore details about the First Grade Sight Words, you can visit respective links and find out the words that were considered by Dolch to be mastered by kids by the time they finished these classes.

By the time children pass 3rd Grade, he/she should be well familiar with all the sight words under the list of Pre-K, kindergarten, first grade, second grade and third-grade sight words list.

The 3rd Grade reading sight word list as given by Dr Dolch is given in the below table:

warm

together

try

shall

seven

pick

light

laugh

kind

got

full

far

clear

carry

bring

today

ten

start

own

only

never

keep

if

hurt

fall

eight

drink

better

about

small

myself

much

long

hot

hold

grow

draw

done

cut

show

six

Sentences using Dolch Sight Words up to 3rd Grade

One can create simple to complex sentences using 3rd-grade sight words.

Let’s have a look at a few examples:

Today, my mother and I carried grocery items home.

I picked up seven eggs for myself and my elder sister.

My little brother got hurt when he fell from the couch.

I am holding a drawing book in my hands.

I am doing well in the class tests and I feel that it is a good start.

My friend’s house is far from mine.

There are eight houses on this street.

Fry 3rd Grade Sight Words

Edmund Fry found the most common words in the books of Grades 3 to 9. He came up with such 1000 words and these words cover almost 90% of the words that kids come across during their formative years of learning.

He provided an extended list of sight words and updated it in the year 1980. He divided these 1000 words into 10 groups of 100 sight words each – the first set has the first hundred sight words i.e. 1 to 100, the second has 101 to 200, the third set has 201 to 300, so on and so forth.

The words in Fry’s list have been divided into groups of 100 on the basis of the frequency with which they appear in texts and speech. So, the first set of words is more common than the words that appear in the next set of words.

Here, we will have a look at the third set (i.e. 201 to 300).

<figure class="wp-block-table
